Abstract

We show that “subjective” experience within psychology can be divided into two importantly different classes: directly apprehended but private phenomena (e.g., visual imagery, inner speaking) and inferred states (e.g., well-being, self-confidence, etc.). We discuss the ramifications of this distinction on measurement.
