Cooperating through Technology: How Generalized Exchange Happens

Abstract
Technology enables individuals, crowds, and organizations to share and collaborate. But why do people contribute without direct rewards? Drawing on the social and biological sciences, we craft a model and test it in Asia and US. Analyzing ~8,000 decisions, we find surprisingly high cooperation—and hints on what enables it.
