Tightening the Purse Strings: Population Density Dampens Generosity

Abstract
Two studies investigated the implications of population density for generosity. In Study 1, participants who thought about a densely (vs. sparsely) populated environment donated less to a charity. In Study 2, archival data revealed that the percentage of household income donated in the U.S. declines with rising population density.
