Abstract

Two experiments tested the context-dependent fixation hypothesis, that new contexts might support incubation effects by liberating problem solvers from fixation. After context-dependent fixation induction, problems were retested in fixation contexts or new contexts. Incubation was greater when initially unsolved problems were retested in new contexts rather than in fixation contexts.
