Abstract

We investigated the relationship among news media exposure, mental well-being, and mood following the 2016 presidential election. Watching news media predicted higher mental distress, an increased likelihood of acute stress, and higher substance use. Viewing clips from Trump’s campaign or reading the transcript increased negative mood, particularly in minority participants.
