Abstract

What best explains the extreme favorability of those who idolize Donald Trump? Data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study indicates that perceptions of one’s candidate’s traits, and emotions the candidate elicits—more than partisanship strength, conservatism, racial resentment, or economic concerns—distinguishes Trump (and Clinton) idolizers from their other supporters.
