Dangers that are vivid, such as mass shootings, can elicit substantial worry even when they are statistically rare. We report a new method for measuring individuals’ sensitivity to probabilities and emotional reactivity to possible but improbable events, and use these measures to predict emotional and behavioral responses to mass shootings.
