Cultural Differences in Communication of Self-Conscious Emotions

We examined cultural differences in effects of communicating self-conscious emotions on interpersonal feelings. Participants described their own experiences vs. listened to a stranger’s. Telling their story led individualistic participants to report feeling closer to a stranger whereas hearing a stranger’s story caused collectivist participants to report greater discomfort.
