Abstract

We examined whether emerging adults’ (EA’s) self-determination mediated the relationship between helicopter parenting (HP) and their well-being. Maternal HP was associated with EA’s decreased autonomy and competence, while paternal HP was associated with EA’s decreased autonomy. These decreases in self-determination predicted increased depressive symptoms, increased anxiety, and decreased life satisfaction.
