Abstract

Consist with recent literature on goal formation, we hypothesized that sympathy joined with attainability of successful helping forms a helping goal that can predict helping behavior. Sympathy towards an American immigrant living in Italy predicted helping, but this effect was much stronger when successful helping was attainable (vs. relatively unattainable).
