Illuminating the Shade: Uncovering a Schadenfreude Expression

Abstract
Results from a pre-registered cross-cultural study provide the first evidence for a distinct nonverbal expression of schadenfreude. Both German and American participants were found to identify the prototypical happiness expression (AU 6 + 12) as schadenfreude when it was paired with downward head tilt and forward-directed eye gaze.
