Abstract

Clothing is considered diagnostic of socioeconomic status (SES), which is associated with competence impressions. The current research found that SES cues in clothes affected competence judgments from faces. The effect persisted through various circumstances. The findings demonstrate the automaticity of trait judgments and the significant consequences of visual SES cues.
