Abstract
In three recognition memory experiments, we demonstrate that participants favor decisions that avoid an additional introspective judgment, thus reducing cognitive “work.” Introspective demands that are unbalanced across judgment types elicit biases that favor ease over the natural classification of memories and can lessen the availability of the reports of interest.
