Abstract

Across 40 best-selling storybooks for young children, some emotions were portrayed in a gender-stereotyped way. Specifically, girl characters depicted the discrete emotion love proportionally more often and boy characters expressed fear and dislike proportionally more often. Happiness, sadness, or worry were not portrayed differently by boy versus girl characters.
