Instrumental Timbre Influences the Emotional Semantics of Musical Mode

In a study of musical semantics, 44 participants evaluated the relatedness of 96 melody-word pairs. Responses confirmed an interaction between musical mode and word affect; the major and minor modes connote happiness and sadness, respectively. Further interactions suggested that instrumental timbre influences the emotional semantics of major and minor modes.
