Abstract
We examined the executive functions underlying attitudes toward a controversial issue. Greater updating (but not inhibition or shifting) ability predicted more favorable attitudes toward senior comprehensive exams after reading strong vs. weak arguments. Moreover, updating influenced depth of information processing, which mediated the relationship between argument strength and attitudes.
