Abstract

Research on the benefits of parental homework assistance is mixed, suggesting more study of the quality and nature of parents’ homework help is needed. This study examined mother-child talk during a math homework activity. Maternal autonomy-supportive and controlling utterances were studied in relation to children’s independent math problem-solving and exploration.
