Abstract

We propose that apocalyptic thinking may serve a compensatory role in mitigating feelings of uncertainty. In an online study, we found a significant positive correlation between aversion to uncertainty and willingness to endorse apocalyptic beliefs. Future research will test a causal link between uncertainty and apocalyptic thinking.
