Middle School Students Now Rate Autonomy-Supportive Teachers As More Effective

Abstract

In contrast to earlier findings, middle school students who read about an autonomy-supportive teacher rated her as more effective and more likeable than students who read about a controlling teacher. We discuss this as a cohort effect that tracks with the recent broader shift toward student-centered approaches.
