Does Negative Gossip Promote or Hinder Cooperation? the Role of Social Inclusion

In three studies we investigated how gossip affected targets’ psychological experience and cooperative behaviors. People who were targets of negative gossip felt pressured to conform to the group norms for performance; however, because gossip harmed targets’ emotions and feelings of social inclusion they decreased their covert and voluntary group contributions.
