Abstract
We investigated how perspective taking, empathy and Machiavellianism influence volunteer participation. An internet-based survey was conducted to 436 Japanese adults aged 20-59 years. The results revealed that it is more effective to improve or suppress consistent characteristics rather than imagine how they would feel in the position of the person.
