Grade Expectations: When 100% Isn’t Good Enough

Abstract

Aligned with economic theory and consumer psychology research, our experiment found that letter grades (rather than equivalent GPA or percentage scores) minimized students’ negative affect (when receiving low scores) and maximized their positive affect (when receiving high scores). Implications for cognitive framing and social identity are discussed.
