Abstract

Dispositional empathy predicts environmentally responsible behaviors, although the mechanisms connecting these variables are poorly understood. The present research found that (low) materialism mediates this relation. These results are consistent with findings that materialism negatively predicts environmentalism, and that empathy is associated with concern for others rather than materialistic concerns.
