Abstract
Clustering and switching scores on verbal (especially semantic) fluency tests don’t straightforwardly reflect semantic and executive processes. Moreover, clustering and switching are affected by task instructions (viz., suggested semantic subcategories versus unelaborated directions). We present evidence that instructional set affects neurocognitive processes underlying clustering, switching, and the interpretation thereof.
