Abstract
In this multi-method longitudinal investigation of divorcing adults, greater levels of self-reported and judge-rated loss of self were associated with worse psychological distress. Participants who spontaneously differentiated their identities from their former partner’s identity reported smaller declines in loss of self three months later and less distress after five months.
