Abstract

Young children played a digital game that taught a math rule. Either an embodied popular media character or a disembodied voiceover, both of whom responded contingently to children’s performance, presented problems. Results indicated that stronger emotional relationships with the character and contingent replies to problems lead to better mathematical performance.
