Abstract
We examined whether perceived racial identity predicted Blacks’ empathy towards racial ingroup members who have prejudiced beliefs about their ingroup. Participants viewed Black targets with prejudiced (vs non-prejudiced) beliefs as weakly identified and, in turn, reported less empathy after the target was discriminated against. Participants’ racial centrality moderated the mediation.
