Abstract
In an expectancy-value paradigm, cost is a component of value that may impact task engagement. The multidimensionality of cost is examined with regard to children’s motivation to engage in physical education (P.E.) classes. Results indicated two types of cost: discomfort vs. social approval and competition. Gender differences varied by school.
