Abstract
Guided by motivational intensity theory, this study examined the impact of listening demand using possible and impossible tasks on effort in listening, indexed by cardiovascular autonomic activity. Increased listening demand induced greater effort in listening (sympathetic automatic activity) while the task remained possible and predicted increased mental fatigue.
