Abstract
To improve bus safety, we assessed the cognitive abilities of children in grades K-2 to read, understand, and follow emergency-related words and instructions involved in opening a school bus roof hatch. Word-level decoding and knowledge varied by grade, and 33% of children in 2nd grade could independently follow instructions.
