Essentializing Happiness Reduces One's Motivation to be Happier

Abstract

Throughout six studies, we showed that essentialist beliefs about happiness among lay people are pervasive and that they reduce individuals’ motivation to engage in happiness-increasing activities. The benefits from happiness-increasing activities were also less effective for those who hold essentialist beliefs about happiness.
