Abstract

We examined how social connectedness affects susceptibility to misinformation. Unexpectedly, individuals high in social connectedness were more likely to form false memories when reading a typical paragraph than when reading social media posts. This suggests that socially-connected individuals may better recognize social media’s fallibility while also overly trusting conventional sources.
