Abstract

Through social interaction, people form trait impressions of others, yet also receive instrumental rewards. Using economic games, we investigated a potential role for instrumental learning in shaping social behavior. Rewards influenced choices above and beyond trait impressions, but only when people learned through instrumental interaction, as opposed to passive observation.
