Abstract
The compulsion to calculate (CTC), jumping to procedures to solve a problem without adequate consideration for the problem, hinders students from understanding and transfer. The current study found that CTC has an ‘inertia’ – if prior problems have activated CTC, then students continue to blindly apply procedures in subsequent problems.
