Abstract

Many U.S. institutions use foreign language placement exams to determine students’ language proficiency. We found that students’ performance on placement tests was positively correlated with the amount of time they spent on the test, suggesting that perhaps effort, not proficiency, was being measured. Schools might consider alternate methods for placement.
