Abstract

Is income inequality associated with well-being in a society with high power distance? We found that Chinese residents in more unequal provinces had lower subjective well-being and more depressive symptoms. Findings suggest that income inequality has adverse effects on well-being, even in societies where people believe that inequalities are acceptable.
