Is It Always Good to Put Yourself in Someone Else's Shoes When Dealing with Interpersonal Conflict?

Abstract
Perspective taking is well-known as a glue to build bridges of understanding. However, perspective taking might not be the best strategy when discussing personally important issues. When people assumed they tried hard to take partner’s perspective, higher ‘topic importance’ lead participants to think more negatively toward one’s opponent.
