Abstract

We tested whether elevated income inequality led to the belief that one’s personal resources were more scarce. Perceptions of inequality as high or low were manipulated, and perceptions of personal resource scarcity were measured. Perceiving inequality as high resulted in increased perceptions of resource scarcity, regardless of participant socioeconomic status.
