Abstract

Although cognitive load reveals underlying preferences for hierarchy, social identity theory suggests social status should influence this effect. Using the ultimatum game, we found increased acceptance of unfair offers under cognitive load in responders who perceived their social status as closer to a high-status proposer, consistent with social identity theory.
