Child Effortful Control Mediates the Association between Early Maternal Sensitivity and Externalizing Behavior in First Grade

Abstract

This study tested an explanatory model for the development of externalizing behavior problems in early childhood. Child effortful control at 54 months was found to mediate the association between early maternal sensitivity and externalizing behavior in 1st grade. Early child temperament did not moderate these paths as predicted.
