Abstract

We present three studies demonstrating that the attributes of normativism and humanism respectively predict biomedical (suffering is a mechanistic problem) vs. redemptive (suffering has a growth purpose) interpretations of suffering (depression). The final study tests the defensive purpose of construals by manipulating perceived proneness to depression through false feedback.
