Abstract

We conducted an experimental study to examine how ambiguous versus overt sexism cues affect women’s achievement goals and performance. Participants were given negative feedback from a male evaluator who was either overtly sexist or ambiguously sexist. Women in the ambiguous condition performed significantly worse than women in the overt condition.
