Abstract

A model is presented demonstrating that cognitive empathy predicts helpful intentions towards hypothetical rape victims irrespective of emotion. However, affective empathy does only to the extent that it elicits anger, whereas experiencing shame increases cruel intentions. This model appears unique to rape and does not capture reactions to non-sexual assault.
