Abstract

The present study integrates Moral Foundations Theory with research on self-conscious emotions by demonstrating that sociocultural affiliations (i.e., political ideology, religiosity, cultural background) predict expected experiences of pride and shame in response to morally relevant situations. Our findings suggest that these emotions might function to enforce culture-specific moral norms.
