Abstract
This study compares the benefits of either pausing and prompting a child for a prediction before hearing a novel word or pausing and prompting a repetition after hearing the word for vocabulary learning during natural shared storybook reading. Four-year-olds demonstrated the strongest word learning when encouraged to make predictions.
