Contributions of Enhanced Semantic Processing to Value Effects on Memory

Abstract

Valuable items are remembered better than less valuable items. We show that these value effects are eliminated when participants are instructed to engage in mental imagery of encoded words. This finding suggests that value exerts its benefits on memory through deeper semantic encoding of valuable items.
