Abstract

Social withdrawal is an early symptom of depression. We show that non-clinical levels of depressive symptoms are associated with reductions in the subjective desirability of rewarding social cues. This reduced social-cue valuation may underpin social withdrawal in early illness phases and serve as a marker for depression onset.
