Abstract

High-power individuals may try to reinforce and protect their positions through engaging in behaviors that highlight their power. However, these behaviors may inspire subsequent resistance in subordinates. We explore in a set of experimental studies when and why expressions of power in hierarchies may incite subordinates to challenge the hierarchy.
