The Cognitive and Psychological Underpinnings of Nationalistic Identity: The Case of Brexit

Abstract

In a sample of 332 UK citizens, we found that strongly nationalistic individuals tend to process information in a more categorical and inflexible manner, even when tested on neutral behaviour-based cognitive tasks that are unrelated to their political beliefs. Structural equation models elucidated the relationships between cognition and ideological identity.
