Alone Together in Cooperative Online Discussions

In online discussion forums, many students' posts never receive a response. In two studies (one observational, one experimental), results indicate that this makes them feel ostracized and causes emotional pain, negative social perceptions, threatens psychological needs, and undermines cooperation, which has major implications for theory, research and practice.
